What is forging process?
Forging is a metal shaping process by applying localized force. Force is applied using a hammer or a die.
Forging is often classified according to the temperature of base material:
- Cold Forging
- Warm Forging
- Hot Forging
What is Casting Process?
Casting is a metal shaping process where a liquid material is poured into a mold and then allowed to solidify to get desired shape. Solidified part is known as a casting.
Various types Of Casting:
- Sand Casting
- Pressure Die Casting
- Investment Casting.
- Permanent mold casting etc.
What is extrusion process?
It is a process to manufacture fixed cross-sectional long profiles. During extrusion process material is pushed through a die of required cross-section.
Advantages of extrusion process is its ability to create very complex cross-sections.
What is the difference between shaper and Planer Machine?
In Shaper machine work-piece is held stationary and the cutting tool on the ram is moved back and forth across the work-piece.
Whereas In planar machine, tool is stationary and work piece travels back and forth under the tool.
What is a press tool ?
Press tools are used in hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical presses to produce sheet metal components. Blanking, piercing, bending, forming, forging and trimming operations are performed on bending machine.
What are stamping operation?
Stamping is a sheet metal process of giving shape to sheet metal parts.
What is the difference between hot rolling and cold rolling process?
Hot rolling process involves rolling steel above re-crystallization temperature. During cooling steel will shrink. Therefore the size and shape of the steel will be less predictable.
Whereas cold rolling process involves rolling steel below re-crystallization temperature (at room temp). Therefore no chance of steel shrinkage.
What is broaching ?
Broaching utilizes a toothed tool (known as broach) to remove material. During broaching metal is cut in complete one pass of the broach.
Types of Broaching:
- Linear Broaching : Broach tool runs linearly against the surface of the workpiece to cut the material.
- Rotary Broaching : Broach is rotated and pressed into the work-piece to cut an axis symmetric shape. Rotary broach tool is used in lathe or screw machine for rotary broaching.
What is swaging?
Swaging is a forging process where part dimensions are modified using dies into which the part is forced. It is a cold working process.
What is the difference in soldering, brazing and welding?
Welding is an operation to join two or more similar material by melting base material or by using filler material rod. Strength of welded parts is similar to the base material. Sometimes pressure is also used along with heat to weld parts (for example spot & seam welding).
Brazing is an operation to join two or more metal parts by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint. Filler metal rod always have lower melting temperature compared to base metals. Different metals with considerable strength can be joined with brazing.
Soldering is a joining operation (usually metals) by melting and flowing a filler metal (also known as solder wire) into the joint. Filler metal always have lower melting temperature compared to base metals. Soldering flux is required for doing good quality solder.
