Delta Robot: Working Advantages and Applications

What are Delta Robot?

Delta Robots are types of parallel robots consisting of Rotary or linear actuated arms connected to a universal joint at the end effector. This end-effector can move in a dome-shaped workspace. These robots are also known as spider robots.

Originally delta robots were developed as overhead mounted machines. This article covers delta robot construction, advantages, limitations and applications.

Delta Robots Construction

Delta robots consist of active and passive arms that are kinematic chains. Robot one end connects with the linear or rotary actuators at the base. On the other side, linkages connects with a universal joint where the end effector is attached.

Motor weight does not come from moving arms because they are attached with fixed base.

Delta robot arms create a parallelogram linkages to maintain the orientation and position of the end effector.

Advantages and Limitations of Delta Robot

Here is the list of advantages and limitations of delta robots.

Advantages
  • Lightweight construction.
  • High speed (pick and place rate) due to low inertia (300 picks per minute).
  • Delta robots with a vision system are the best choice for picking and placing parts on the assembly line.
  • High Stiffness
Limitations
  • Low Payload capacity
  • Small working volume because all robotic arms are connected with an end-effector.
  • Can handle lightweight parts.

Applications of Delta Robots

These robots are widely used in various industries as pick and place robots. Here is the list of advantages of delta robots.

  • Picking products from a group and placing them on conveyers belts on packing lines
  • Adhesive Dispensing
  • Packing and sorting in the cosmetic, food processing, and pharmaceutical Industry
  • Soldering
  • Highly precision Assembly Operations
  • 3D printers
  • Haptic Controllers

Factor to consider during the selection of Delta Robots

  • Positioning Accuracy
  • WorkSpace Type and Volume
  • Max Load capacity
  • Production Throughput: Picks per Minute
  • Max Speed
  • Maintenance
  • Compare it with Scara Robot
